Syllabus Development

Every Clinics in Motion fundamental level publication undergoes a number of clearly defined stages of development. The founding principle of Clinics in Motion is to produce a publication for Physiotherapists by Physiotherapists. The content of each publication is peer reviewed, includes evidence based material where available, and meets the highest international clinical and educational standard.

We have used a systematic process to ensure that each DVD meets the highest standards demanded by the physiotherapy profession, and to ensure that the content represents an international consensus of opinion regarding the development of the practical skills fundamental to current clinical practice in this area. We have termed this process the Consensus Development System©

The process includes 5 distinct opportunities for peer review from a variety of international academic sources to bring in latest global thinking in this area to you on this DVD. It also ensures that each volume will most exactly meet the current needs of physiotherapy students, physiotherapists and their tutors

1.      Draft Syllabus Development

Each initial syllabus is prepared by physiotherapists with specialist clinical and educational experience in this field. Each draft syllabus is extensive, is designed to be as inclusive as possible, and should reflect current best practice in this area of Physiotherapy. At this Fundamental level, each syllabus should contain all of the fundamental practical techniques in which a graduate physiotherapist would be expected to be proficient. In this series Helen French, Karen McCreesh and Jeremy Walsh completed this step.

2.      Initial Peer Review

The initial panel of physiotherapists with a special interest in this field are allowed comment on each draft. The entire syllabus is further reviewed by the Clinical Director of the company, and the Series Editor. The syllabus is amended after consideration of this initial feedback and comment.

3.  Syllabus Standardisation and Formatting

The Series Editor refines the aims, scope, emphasis and planned content for each volume. The syllabus for each volume is formatted to a standardised template that can be converted to a series of distinct chapters that will form the basis of each DVD, and a planned filming schedule.

4.      International Syllabus Review

Clinics in Motion have established contacts with a number of Physiotherapists (Physical Therapist in the USA) and offered them the opportunity to comment on the contents of each syllabus. This further peer review allows the syllabus to expand to include a global perspective and ensures that the proposed content has a global usefulness. The guiding principle behind this section of the review is to be ‘inclusive’ allowing more content to be generated and giving more choice on each volume. This section also allows for the development of future publications ideas, when material that is suggested cannot be accommodated in a particular volume

5.      Consensus Syllabus Assimilation

The Series Editor further amends the syllabus to reflect and take consideration of the international peer review. This syllabus forms the basis of what will be produced on each DVD.

6.      Syllabus Allocation and Rehearsal

Prior to filming Clinics in Motion select a number of primary presenters supplemented by additional suitably qualified persons to film on each DVD. Every physiotherapist chosen to present is highly experienced academically and clinically. Every performance is rehearsed with peer panel review to ensure the quality and accuracy of content. It allows controversial areas to be identified in advance of recording and ensures that all aspects of the material to be presented have been considered.

7.      Production and Development

All chapters are filmed in front of a live peer review panel. This again ensures that the content is of the highest academic standard and screens for accuracy of content and practical application of best practice guidelines in manual therapy. A key focus among the peers is to consider the handling skills of the performer and any reference to clinical reasoning and previously published material.

8.      Editing and Review

The editing process allows for another peer review of the content in advance of publishing. All filmed material is again reviewed by experienced physiotherapists prior to final review. This is to ensure the accuracy of content and the quality of clinical presentation. The Series Editor is responsible for ensuring that the final filmed content accurately represents the Consensus Syllabus. The final peer review is undertaken by the Clinical Director in advance of publication.
